                      First Quarter Reading & Language Arts 


                      This quarter our students will be expected to 
                      • Consistently and independently applies knowledge of letter'/sound correspondence and spelling to decode unfamiliar words.
                      • Read 60+ words per minute and have a DRA score of 20 or higher. 
                      • Consistently and independently read a variety of texts; recognizes words with multiple meanings; determine meaning of unknown words on the basis of context; and apply usage of compound words, contractions, and phonics.
                      • Consistently and independentlycomprehend 90% - 100% of grade level text (makes, predictins; distinguishes fact from fictin; makes connections between texts and personal experiences; generates questions before, during, and after reading and uses mental images to help understand story); DRA 18 or above.
                        Consistently and independently identifies 60% of more of grade-level Dolch sight words.
                      • Consistently and independently construct a piece of narrative writing that includes all of the following elements: varied word choice, a variety of sentence structures, and lengths appropriate for the selected audience.
                      • Consistently and independently writes using appropriate capitalization and punctuation (period, question and exclamation marks) at the end of sentences (declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory; simple and compound).
                      • Consistently and independently  write in complete sentences with correct subject-verb agreement; identifies and uses subjects and predicates correctly in a sentence.

                      We will continue learning about and using the seven reading strategies: visualizing (making mental images), using our background information and text clues to infer, questioning, determining important ideas and themes, synthesizing and using fix-up strategies. Emphasis will be on inferencing and determining important ideas in order to summarize and determine main idea.
