                      Homework/Practice

                      Homework

Please review homework with your child.  Homework turned in daily. No Homework on Fridays.

Monday:  Students will have a math assignment.  Also, students should practice their spelling words and math facts.  Students should read a self-selected book for a minimum of 20 minutes and record in the Communication folder.  Reading each night is essential to reading fluency and vocabulary acquisition.  Instant recall of basic math facts makes all other math skills much easier.

Tuesday:  Students are to read the story of the week to an adult and must return their reading book on Wednesday.  Homework will include a written response to the story.  Also, the title of the story and the number of minutes read should be recorded in the Communication folder.  Missed spelling words should be practiced.  Additional spelling practice may be given.  Vocabulary sentences should be written tonight and practiced at home.  Students not doing well on the vocabulary test will be asked to turn in sentences on Wednesday to be checked by the teacher.

Wednesday:  Students will have a math assignment.  Students are to read the story of the week to an adult and must return their reading book on Thursday. Students should read a self-selected book for a minimum of 15 minutes and record in the Communication folder.  Students should also practice math facts.

Thursday:  Students will have a grammar practice page or writing assignment.  Students should practice their missed spelling words, their vocabulary sentences, and math facts.  Students should read a self-selected book for a minimum of 15 minutes and record in the Communication folder.  Spelling, vocabulary and comprehension tests are tomorrow.

Friday:  Students should read a self-selected book for a minimum of 20 minutes.

If for some reason your child is unable to complete his/her homework, please send a note and your child will be allowed to make up the work.  If your child loses his/her spelling and vocabulary words, it is his/her responsibility to ask for another set.

Weekly graded assignments and behavior grades are sent home in the Communication folder on Monday from the previous week.  Please go over these as well with your child.  Don’t forget to sign the form inside the folder.

                      Practice

                      ·          Students are expected to demonstrate Covey's 7 Habits of a Happy Kid and qualities becoming of a future leader.  Please discuss the importance of appropriate behavior, kindness, and simple courtesy.

                      ·          Students will be able to practice math facts using the Harcourt Math Facts computer program and with flash cards.  It is suggested that you have your child practice nightly at home until mastery.  Students also will be tested weekly on basic facts.

                      ·          All second graders are expected to write complete sentences with proper ending punctuation and beginning capitalization at all times.  It is very important that students practice writing complete sentences at all times.

                      ·          Spelling City is a wonderful website for practicing our spelling words.  A pre-test is given on Monday (this will let you know which words your child needs to learn.)  If all words are spelled correctly on Monday, the student does not have to take the test on Friday.

                      ·          Legible handwriting is something every person should aspire to achieve.  Your child will have ample opportunities to practice handwriting throughout their second grade academic career.  Please emphasize the importance of legible handwriting.
